I began teaching with VIPKid in September 2018. I learn by doing, and this blog is a chronicle to how I got hired, how I got started teaching, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
I work full time in corporate America and I was looking for a way to do something more meaningful and earn some extra money. I work from home as a customer service manager from 8-5 Monday through Friday. I have a family, a community, and life in general that would prevent me from a full time evening commitment, so I wasn’t sure where to start. VIPKid provides the opportunity to make a difference in children’s lives and help bridge two cultures that are an ocean apart. Even better, it allows me to set my own flexible schedule AND get paid for it!
But I’m not a teacher!
That’s right. A lot of the videos you’ll find online are past or present teachers who already have a strong classroom background. I’m a little bit different. I was a corporate trainer for many years, so while I understand about learning styles and classroom techniques, I’m not a traditional teacher. That experience, plus the years of tutoring my own kiddos and their friends is enough.
To be eligible to be hired, you just need:
- At least one year of teaching experience of any kind (including tutoring, coaching, or mentoring)
- A bachelor’s degree or higher
- Eligibility to work in the U.S. or Canada
- A computer, headset, and high speed internet
If you are interested, please check out my posts and links. I found that a lot of the resources available are videos, and often they take 20-30 minutes to watch. My goal is to provide easy access to insight based on my own personal experiences. You can read them, or watch short “quick hit” videos to get the answers to specific questions.
Feel free to contact me with any questions you have. I would love to help answer questions or offer suggestions! I’ll also try to respond to any comments on the posts.
I’m willing to do my best to help you through the interview process and beyond. I’ll be the Hobbes to your Calvin, the Laverne to your Shirley, the Bert to your Ernie… In short, I’ll be your partner in this process.
Good luck to you, and I hope you find this page helpful as you start your own journey with VIPKid!
